Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Business Improvement Area (BIA)?
A Business Improvement Area (BIA) is an area designated by City Council within which businesses and property owners can implement programs to increase the area’s profile and vitality. A non-profit association of property owners and business tenants is the vehicle by which these programs can be initiated. Through the BIA, area property owners and tenants can develop and implement a strategic plan to improve the area’s physical environment and promote its business.
Additional information about Vancouver’s BIAs can be found at the City of Vancouver’s website: http://vancouver.ca/commsvcs/cityplans/bia/index.htm
What is a Commercial Area Profile?
The commercial area profiles describe the business mix, land use, and development potential of the BIAs. Data for the profiles has been sourced through Small Business BC, the City of Vancouver, BC Assessment Authority, Vancouver Real Estate Board, and BIA member surveys.
What is a Neighbourhood Area Profile?
The neighbourhood area profiles describe the customer base of the BIAs, based on the adjacent neighbourhood. Data for the profiles has been sourced through Statistics Canada’s 2001 Census and Household Expenditure Surveys, BIA market surveys, the City of Vancouver, and the Vancouver Real Estate Board.
Why can’t I get information about all of Vancouver’s BIAs?
The initial phase of the BizMapBC project has established profiles for 8 of Vancouver’s 18 BIAs. We are reviewing options to expand the number of BIA profiles in the future.
